Aviation Mall is excited to be hosting the 21st Annual Turning Point District Level Pinewood Derby on Sunday, March 5th in the JCPenney wing of the mall. Competitors will participate in The Pinewood Derby, beginning at 2 p.m.
The first Pinewood Derby was held 70 years ago in 1953 in California and is popular as ever among Cub Scouts. Since that first derby, Cub Scouts have built close to 100 million Pinewood Derby cars.
The Pinewood Derby is a racing event for unpowered, unmanned miniature cars. Scouts build their own cars from blocks of wood, plastic wheels, and metal axles. The track has lanes and slopes down to the ground since the cars are powered by gravity. According to the Boy Scouts of America, “The Pinewood Derby is a fun and social event that is much more than racing wooden cars down a speed track. It is an event that fosters sportsmanship and a healthy competition.”
